On May 23, 2013, I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. The next week, my husband and I came to MD Anderson for my first appointment.

My friend, a doctor, had recommended I seek treatment at MD Anderson if I needed a Whipple procedure, a difficult surgery used to treat pancreatic cancer. I didn’t yet know if I needed a Whipple procedure. But I didn’t want to waste any time or look back with any regrets.

During my first appointment at MD Anderson, my amazing surgeon, Matthew Katz, M.D., told me that I would be dead in a year if I did nothing. I wanted to live, so I asked my doctors to throw everything they had at me. Pancreatic cancer has a very high recurrence rate, and I didn’t want cancer to spread or come back.

Smoking and Pancreatic Cancer

The thing is I was always a smoker, not a heavy one but I did smoke. Even though I know it is bad for you, but many other things are bad and we still do them, so I never had any doubts about whether or not the thing I am doing will harm me and in what way. Once I was diagnosed with cancer I wanted to do all in my power to stop smoking and maybe speed up my recovery.

There is no direct link between the pancreas and our smoking habit but it is safe to say that in the long run it’s not good for you and it slows down your metabolism significantly so you should think about what you are doing. The great thing about today’s world is that it offers a lot of alternatives for you to use in staid of something else that you like but is harmful to you.

Vaping and Being Sick

Once I was in recovery I had to spend a lot of time at my house and do nothing. This is something I am not used to so I tried to find ways to amuse myself. The other thing that came up over and over again was a craving to get a cigarette and light it up. Of course, I was not going to do that but then I figured out that I can do something about my craving.

That’s when I bought the e-cigarette and started enjoying the rich smoke that comes out of the vaping pen and I could control the amount of nicotine that I take in. Eventually, I was smoking nicotine free e-liquid but the sensation of smoking was still present. This is one of those inventions

I will recommend to everyone who is a smoker and they have to find a way to change their habit or stop altogether.
